The Arc Grand Prix Run welcomed more than 600 participants at Watkins Glen International on Saturday, April 14 during WGI Opening Weekend. This was the fifth year for the event, a fundraiser for The Arc of Schuyler, a not-for-profit organization based in Watkins Glen that provides a range of supports for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism.
Runners and walkers were timed on a challenging 3.4 mile road course while others enjoyed a one-mile walk on the track.
Matthew Wilbur, 33, of Corning, NY placed first overall with a time of 17:58.38. Wilbur was also the winner in 2015 with a time of 18:12. Brieanne O’Hearn, 33, of Horseheads was the first female finisher with a time of 22:46.36.
Timothy Stahlnecker of Waterloo, 29, the winner in 2016 and 2017, placed second with a time of 19:23:01. Kevin Ashton, 38, of Corning took third with a time of 20:00.67. Bottle opener award medallions, sponsored by Grist Iron Brewing were presented with bottles of root beer to the top three male and female finishers in nine age categories. The event was timed by Auyer Race Timing. A complete list of finishers is linked on arcgrandprixrun.org.
“We couldn’t make this event happen without the team at Watkins Glen International, incredible volunteers, and the support of many generous sponsors. We owe a big thanks to our very supportive community,” The Arc’s Director of Community Relations, Holly Baker said. “We’ll continue to grow the event and look forward to next year.”
Grist Iron Brewing Company hosted a well-attended race after party with live music by Pat Comstock and a BBQ buffet.
Title sponsor, Watkins Glen International provided the facilities and security for the event. Chemung Canal Trust Company, Grist Iron Brewing, Elmira Structures, Watkins Glen Lumber, Cargill, and Relph Benefit Advisors were listed as top supporters along with t-shirt and in-kind sponsors that can be found on the race website.
